“But Can’t we Get the Same Thing with a Standard Model?” Rationalizing Bounded-Rationality Models∗

چکیده

This paper discusses a common criticism of economic models that depart from the standard rational-choice paradigm namely, that the phenomena addressed by such models can be “rationalized” by some standard model. I criticize this criterion for evaluating bounded-rationality models. Using a market model with boundedly rational consumers due to Spiegler (2006a) as a test case, I show that even when it initially appears that a bounded-rationality model can be rationalized by a standard model, the rationalizing models tend to come with unwarranted “extra baggage”. I conclude that we should impose a greater burden of proof on rationalizations that are offered in refutation of such models. ∗I thank Ayala Arad, Yves Guéron, Barton Lipman, Ariel Rubinstein and participants at the Summer School in Economics and Philosophy, San Sebastian 2009, for their comments. Rational Choice Theory: A Cultural Reconsideration

Economists have heralded the formulation of the expected utility theorem as a universal method of choice under uncertainty. In their seminal paper, Stigler and Becker (Stigler & Becker, 1977) declared that “human behavior can be explained by a generalized calculus of utility-maximizing behavior” (p.76). The universality of the rational choice theory has been widely criticized by psychologists, ...

Why Bounded Rationality?

NEARLY EVERYONE would see the truth as between Hamlet and Puck. Including Hamlet and Puck. Hamlet is feigning madness, and Puck is just being, well, puckish. Model-writing economists, however, tend not to the middle but to the “infinite in faculties” extreme. Although the postulate of unbounded rationality has dominated economic modeling for several decades, the dominance is relaxing. Is this e...

A multi-agent cognitive framework to model human decision making under bounded rationality

Classical Decision Theory has been widely used in multi-agent systems, but are not representative of decision-making in real conditions. So, we built an architecture based on several cognitive psychological theories (e.g. Simon’s decision theory, Tversky’s model of elimination by aspect, etc.) to take human bounded rationality into account. We adopt an intermediate-level of cognitive modelisati...

Validating Models for Bounded Rationality and Decision Biases in a Newsvendor Experiment

A number of experimental newsvendor studies have shown that human subjects make decisions which coincide with a “pull-to-center” effect. In general, three behavioral theories have been proposed in the literature to explain this behavior: bounded rationality, mean anchoring, and minimizing ex post inventory regret. Unfortunately, these models generate similar predictions under symmetric demand d...

Modeling Risky Economic Decision-Making with Bounded Rationality

Models of economic decisions often assume people maximize a preference or utility function. While this assumption provides insights into a wide range of economic behavior, in some cases its predictions contradict observed behavior. We illustrate this situation with human-subject experiments of decisions involving risk. We show how the addition of bounded rationality to the economic model can ex...
